Isabelle Geffroy[1] (born 1 May 1980 in Tours), better known by the nickname Zaz, is a French singer mixing jazzy styles, French variety, soul and acoustic. She is famous for her hit "Je veux", from her first album, Zaz, released on 10 May 2010.[2]
Early life
Her mother was a French teacher, her father worked for an electric company. In 1985, she entered the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Tours with her sister and her brother, and attended courses from the ages of five to eleven. She studied music theory; specifically the violin, piano, guitar, and choral singing. In 1994 she moved to Bordeaux. In 1995, she took singing lessons, and played sports for a year in Bordeaux, all while studying kung fu with a professional coach.[3] In 2000, she won a scholarship from the regional council, which allowed her to join a school of modern music; the CIAM of Bordeaux (Centre for Information and Musical Activities). Her musical influences included 'Four Seasons' by Vivaldi, jazz singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, and other singers such as Enrico Macias, Bobby McFerrin and Richard Bona, as well as African, Latin and Cuban rhythms. In 2006, she moved to Paris.
Singing career
In 2001, she started her singing career in the blues band "Fifty Fingers". She sang in musical groups in Angoulême, especially in a jazz quintet.[4] She became one of the four singers of Izar-Adatz (Basque for "Shooting Star"), a variety band which consisted of sixteen people with whom she toured for two years, especially in the Midi-Pyrenees and the Basque Country. She worked in the studio as a chorister in Toulouse and performed with many singers including Maeso, Art Mengo, Vladimir Max, Jean-Pierre Mader and Serge Guerao.
In May 2010, French magazine Telerama announced: "Rumor has swelled in recent weeks: Zaz is a sacred voice, and she will be the revelation of the summer!".[5] On 10 May 2010, Zaz released her first album. It contains songs she wrote ("Trop sensible") and co-composed ("Les passants", "Le long de la route", "Prends garde à ta langue", "J'aime à nouveau", "Ni oui ni non"). Kerredine Soltani produced the album on the label "Play On", and wrote and composed the hit single "Je veux". The pop singer Raphaël Haroche wrote her songs "Éblouie par la nuit", "Port Coton" and "La fée". In 2010, she signed a contract for her tours with Caramba and publisher Sony ATV. She was invited to make several television appearances (such as Taratata or Chabada) and was featured in several programs on the radio.
Zaz then toured France (Paris, La Rochelle, Montauban, Saint-Ouen, Chateauroux, Landerneau, Fécamp...), performed at the Francofolies of Montreal (Canada), Monthey (Switzerland), Brussels, Berlin, and Milan... In autumn Zaz topped the charts in Belgium, Switzerland, and Austria. Matthieu Baligand, her manager and producer at Caramba Entertainment, explained to Liberation: "We talk a lot of her right now and people are waiting her at the turn... Despite the demand, it seems preferable to do her first tour in fifty small places which will render her credible. Zaz is a popular, intuitive artist, who is familiar with music, who can sing, but doing a quality show is something else (...)." In November 2010, the debut album Zaz became double platinum, and she was awarded "Revelation Song" by the Academy Charles Cros. Zaz also won the European Border Breaker Awards: she was named the French artist most played abroad in 2010. According to a survey published by L'Internaute, Zaz was the most popular French singer in the 2010 ranking.[6]
In 2011, she joined the Les Enfoires charity ensemble.

Called
"...one of the wonders of world trance music", by The Los Angeles
Times, Mamak Khadem captivates audiences by blending her roots in the
ancient poetry and music of the Persian masters with a bold and
revolutionary new sound. By nature, she is a nomad, one who thrives on
open spaces. By
occupation, she is a bridge, one that connects geography to lore. In
music, she is open to cultural influences, but she has chosen the
classical Persian style as her base. Formerly of the sensational
cross-cultural fusion ensemble AXIOM OF CHOICE, Mamak weaves a canopy,
both simple and rich, for a stunningly emotional and spiritual musical
experience that inspires new listeners to embrace cultural diversity and
an awareness and appreciation of Persian arts and culture through a
blending of old and new.
Inspired by the poetry and paintings of Iranian artist Sohrab Sepehri, Mamak Khadem’s new project "A Window To Color" shares a message of peace and understanding through an exploration of what is most sacred in the natural world as expressed in Sepehri’s contributions to the cannon of Persian literature, culture, history and traditions. Like Sepehri, Mamak Khadem seeks to explore the intersections of Eastern and Western traditions. Collaborating with traditional performers from Iran as well as world-aware instrumentalists from the West, Mamak hopes to inspire people around the world, particularly the young, to contemplate, observe and celebrate the value of nature and the environment. Mamak's first solo album "Jostojoo (Forever Seeking)" features some of Mamak's favorite Persian poetry blended with carefully chosen melodies rooted in the traditions of Armenia, Greece, Turkey and Iran.
Mamak Khadem was born in Iran, at a time when
tides were changing. She was part of the Children's Choir for National
Radio and Television of Iran, but it wasn't until after the Iranian
Revolution that her passion for singing waxed. Inspired by works of
master musicians, she seized every opportunity to further her vocal art,
regularly traveling back to Iran to study with some of the finest
Persian vocalists and masters. She also benefited from the study of
classical Indian singing tradition at the Ali Akbar Khan College of
Music in Northern California and from singing with the Los Angeles
based Balkan choir Nevenka.
Performances
Mamak has
appeared throughout the Middle East, the US and Europe; performing at
the Perth Concert Hall in Australia, the Greek Theater (Los Angeles,)
the Smithsonian Institute (Washington DC), the Museum of Folk
Instruments (Greece), the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, House
of Culture in Germany, California Plaza Grand Performances (Los
Angeles), the Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles), the World Festival
of Sacred Music, (Los Angeles), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
(Los Angeles), Voices of Women Festival (Greece).
Workshops & Classes
Mamk
teaches classical Persian music in Los Angeles as well as conducting
workshops for non-musicians that incorporate singing, meditation and
movement. Many of her students now use her vocal techniques in their
practices and performances.
She has also taught at the Middle Eastern Music and
Dance Camp in Mendocino, California, the Labyrinth School of Music in
Hudetsi, Greece, the Irish World Academy Of Music and Dance, University
of Limerick, and University of Toronto.

and Profiler TV series), Marco Beltrami (on the feature soundtrack to

Vampire Slayer TV series), Richard Gibbs (on the score of Battlestar
Galactica TV series), and Jamshid Sharifi (on the feature soundtrack to
the motion picture Persona Non Grata).
She sang for the music
score of a theatrical production, Majles-e Shabih, composed by Iranian
composer and ethnomusicologist Mohammad Reza Darvishi. The play was
written and directed by renowned Iranian playwright and director Bahram
Bayzai. It took the stage of Tehran's City Theater in the summer of
2005. Mamak also sang for the Libation Bearers, a play directed by Lee
Breurer at Patras Festival in Greece (2006), The music of the Libation
Bearers was composed by Eve Beglarian.
